The Jack Kent Cooke Foundation Young Scholars Program offers the most personalized, generous scholarship and educational support to exceptionally promising students from families across the nation who have financial need.
Young Scholars receive comprehensive educational advising and financial support from the 8th grade through high school to pursue their unique academic and talent goals.
BTNY’s Kevin Lin was recently announced a Scholar this season. We asked him about this experience!
Why did you decide to apply?
I decided to apply to become a Jack Kent Cooke Scholar after a Breakthrough New York tutor announced to my peers and me that she was a Jack Kent Cooke
Scholar and that it was an extremely helpful program that offers plenty of support, similar to Breakthrough.
Sam, the Manhattan Middle School Director then proceeded to take a survey to see which students were interested. I knew that if I got in Breakthrough's support coupled with JKCF would be advantageous to my future and increase the amount of resources I would have access to and ultimately decided to apply.
What was the application process like?
The application process was, to be truthful, grueling. Phase 1 required a plethora of forms to be filled out and I had to provide information, so JKCF could see if I would benefit from being a part of Cohort 14.
After getting past Phase 1, I was introduced to Phase 2. Over the course of a few weeks, I balanced BTNY, school, and completing essays and short responses for Phase 2.
Finally, I submitted additional forms and my Phase 2 application. Several weeks later, I received an email from JKCF, stating that I had advanced to Phase 3, the final part of the entire application process that spanned over the course of several months. It was the interview, which admittedly, was the least stressful, for I conducted the interview within the comfort of my own home.
What excites you about this opportunity?
I was ecstatic when I received the news that I was accepted and am extremely excited for the opportunity to be in this program. Now, I not only have BTNY, but JKCF supporting me throughout high school.
Additionally, what excites me most about being a part of JKCF is that after Breakthrough's summer portion ends, I can continue to learn and enjoy, ensuring that I can pursue my interests and continue to develop invaluable skills.
