The college application process can be daunting to even the most savvy of students. At Breakthrough New York, we work closely with our scholars - and their families - to ensure they not only can get into the schools of their choice, but receive scholarships to support them through higher education as well.
The results are paying off: 100% of our students are placed in selective four-year colleges each year. And now, four of our scholars started off 2017 with news that they won coveted scholarships from the Posse Foundation, which recognizes students with “extraordinary academic and leadership potential.”
We congratulate Kudirat, Eduardo, David and Jailene on their scholarships and are certain they are on the road to success.
“The scholarships will truly help our students receive a great education without going into deep debt,” says BTNY’s High School Coordinator Arshele Tyus. “The scholarships also offer the students a ‘posse,’ a group of peers, allowing them to have a support system away from home. I think that is a great perk!”
The typical BTNY student is high-achieving, and dreams of succeeding in college, in their career, and in life. We ensure they can achieve their goals, and that includes pairing each student with an Application Coach to help the student (and his or her family) successfully navigate the college application and financial aid processes. (Additionally, students receive intensive test prep for all standardized entrance exams, such as the ACT).
During their high school years, this involves Super Saturdays, where they attend sessions on college exploration, application preparation, and financial aid. We also work closely with them on personal and academic development, and assign them mentors.
Aware that our students’ families are at the lower end of the economic scale, we assist with seeking scholarships, and in the case of Posse, nominate some of our high-achievers who meet Posse’s requirements. This year, we had them meet with Posse alums, help them as they select the colleges and universities they wish to attend, and then guide them through the application and interview process.
“BTNY helped me choose the right school and see that I should go through with it,” says David, 17, a senior at Millennium Brooklyn High School in Brooklyn who is attending Babson College this fall. He credits BTNY for helping him with ACT practice, interviews, and Posse sessions, and for “carving me into the person I am today - that is a leader and team oriented person.”
Jailene, 17, a senior at Millennium High School who will attend Lawrence University this fall, adds, “If it were not for the help of BTNY and their access to Posse alumni, it would have been difficult for me to reach out for Posse. Breakthrough has helped by teaching me and other students that whatever we put our minds to is possible. And I thank BTNY for pushing us to do our best.”
We also were by their side as they prepared to meet with other Posse finalists and admission officers at their selected colleges. The final choices were made in December. Scholarships kick in as soon as students receive word they’ve become a Posse scholar, and last throughout their college years (the value can top $100,000).
“Winning this scholarship means so much to me that I can't even put it into the exact words,” says Kudirat, 17, a senior at the Hyde Leadership Charter School in The Bronx who is planning to attend the University or Wisconsin-Madison next fall. “When I received the phone call, I knew that whatever my mother sacrificed for me to be where I am now will never be for naught. It was also an indicator that I was finally one step ahead in cultivating my dream ambition!”
Adds Eduardo, 17, who attends Saint Raymond High School for Boys in The Bronx and will attend DePauw University, “Winning the Posse scholarship opens unlimited doors of opportunity to explore and expand my expertise of a particular field of interest and use my acquired knowledge to benefit society in the future. It definitely feels unreal!”
